When I first heard about this movie, I didn’t have very high hopes. It wasn’t something I was used to seeing, but I am so glad I saw it anyway! The movie stars featured are Taraji Henson, Octavia Spencer, Janelle Monáe, and Jim Parsons.
Directed by American screenwriter Theodore Melfi, Hidden Figures follows the journey of three African-American female mathematicians who work for NASA. Set in the 1960’s, the women are confronted with many challenges of the time, including sexism, segregation, and blatant racism. Despite this, they defy all odds and play a major part in the launch and landing of Friendship 7, the mission to bring the first man into orbit around the earth.
The movie is inspirational, uplifting, and emotional. A plus is that it’s based on a true event, which gives it much more tension and suspense. From the beautiful images and scenery to the passionate story, Hidden Figures is one of the best films of the century thus far, and brings to light the “hidden figures” behind a legendary mission.
Hidden Figures was nominated for three Oscars, including Best Picture, and grossed over $224 million dollars.
