Playing for her fourth year of rugby with the Highlanders and her second year with Team New Brunswick is the competitive and determined Anna Mallard. She is currently in her final year of high school and has big plans for her rugby career!
Anna discovered her love for rugby in her first year of high school as a Highlander. “I was hesitant to do it, but my sister was the one who really pushed me,” Anna tells the Highlander News. The first few practices were very intimidating. She says, “It seemed as if every other girl in the older grades knew what they were doing and we grade 9’s did not.” Anna plays best as a forward but has switched between several positions over the years. With Anna being a returning player for the Highlanders, she earned an important leadership role on the team. In grade 11, she was a co-captain, and will continue in that role this upcoming season.
Anna has developed and adjusted quickly to the sport with the guidance of her supportive coaches. She says, “They were the ones who approached me about trying out for the provincial team and I am thankful they did.” This is where she took her next step in her rugby career. She began to play for Team New Brunswick in the summer of 2016 and will continue to be a part of the team this summer. “You can’t help but feel good about yourself when you make a team with the best players in the entire province,” Anna adds.
Her final rugby season with the Highlanders will soon come to an end. However, her love for rugby will carry on into her university years. She is very hopeful that she will play for the University of Prince Edward Island. “I would have never thought I would be capable of playing such high levels of this sport, but it just goes to show how drive and determination can lead you to do amazing things,” she says.
Anna’s last rugby season as a Highlander kicks off on April 27th. The Highlander family wishes her and her teammates the best of luck.
